PowerLog

Well Log Petrophysical Analysis

Read about the Benefits of Integrating Rock Physics with Petrophysics

PowerLog® is the only choice for well log analysis for many companies. Part of PowerBench® Petrophysics, its ease of use and efficiency of operation are unsurpassed and a testament to the feedback customers have provided over the past 20 years. Designed for use by anyone who needs to provide quality well log interpretation, PowerLog is used every day by petrophysicists, geologists, reservoir engineers and others involved in oil field appraisal and development.

"With its user programming, data editing, multi-well interpretation and batch processing capabilities considered, PowerLog is perhaps the best value-for-the-dollar of any formation evaluation software product on the market today."—Paul Connolly, Chief Petrophysicist, EOG Resources Houston

Efficiency of Operation

Every function within PowerLog has been tuned for efficient operation. The first demonstration of this is at data load. There is no imposition of a unit system during this process, so there is no delay. A specialized interface to Petra is available for passing data back and forth, and similar features are under development for GeoFrame and OpenWorks.

Once data is loaded and inspected, a logplot or other presentation can be quickly generated so that you can get your bearings and begin editing. As you work with the well log, you receive immediate feedback. PowerLog adjusts the log so you can see the effect of your changes right away.

PowerLog's efficiency stems from the combination of user input and our long experience in working with well log data. Our services group uses PowerLog every day, and provides a stream of continuous feedback to the development group. Similarly, our customers are invaluable in providing insight into making PowerLog ever more useful and efficient.

"For our business, the multi-well capability is very powerful. We can litterally process thousands of wells at one time. PowerLog's multi-well capability is far superior to any other program that I have seen to date. We just finished a 100-well project in four days. That's the power of PowerLog for you!"—Jim Wallace, Principal and Petrophysicist, Hunt Wallace and Associates

Depth of Functionality

PowerLog is rich with tools for every phase of well log analysis, from data import/export to editing, computation, interpretation, and presentation. The Synthetic Curve Generator allows you to predict curves in wells where data is missing and to automate bad-data editing. Advanced interpretation capabilities enable the calculation of clay volume, porosity, lithology and water saturation with a variety of complex lithology and shaly sand modules. PowerLog also provides environmental corrections from all of the major logging companies including Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker Atlas, and Computalog.

Ease of Use

From the beginning, PowerLog has been known for its ease of use. This aspect of the product is critical to our customers and will not change. Every feature added or modified is painstakingly reviewed to ensure that ease of use is not compromised.

Portability

Often, well log analysis must occur before drilling or logging can continue. As a result, petrophysicists and others must work late at night, on the weekend or at the well site. PowerLog makes this much easier.

PowerLog is completely portable. All you need is a laptop to carry PowerLog to the well site, out to the rig or onto an airplane. You can use PowerLog in your client's office wherever that is. And you can use it in your own home, which can be handy when working late at night or over the weekend. It can be as simple as receiving a log via email and starting your edits and interpretation.

Presentation Graphics

We recognize the importance of graphics in showing others the outcome of your analysis. With PowerLog, you can easily create detailed logplots, crossplots, cross sections, and multi-well collages showing connected tops and zones.

Rock Physics

PowerLog - RPM integrates the log analysis of PowerLog with rock physics elastic modeling for seismic AVO analysis. A common problem in AVO analysis is the fact that DT logs are available but DTS logs are not. There is therefore a need to be able to generate quality synthetic shear sonic logs that correspond to the compressional sonic and density logs. The consistency of the elastic logs is also essential for the success of an AVO seismic analysis or inversion.

Associated Products

Two associated products/modules are available:

PowerLogGEO—Designed primarily for geologists and engineers who want to get a quick look analysis of their logs, as well as techs who just need to do data importing, editing and presentation. The results from PowerLog GEO can then be taken by PowerLog and further processed.

StatMin—An add-on statistical mineral analysis module that uses a probabilistic model to calculate lithology, mineralogy, and/or porosity and can easily adapt to the needs of the analyst. Any well log or computed curve that responds to lithology/mineralogy can be used as an input. StatMin solves balanced, over-determined, and under-determined models. In addition to the mineral volumes, a reconstructed version of each input curve is computed and output.

PowerLog Features
